![]() ![]() Echtra released an alpha version to the public in 2018 just 2 years after work on the game have started with a bunch of systems that were in initial concept stages. People that worked on Diablo 2 and Marvel heroes were eventually brought on board for the project. Max Schaefer and a couple other developers left Runic during the development of Hob because the rest of the developers in Runic did not want to work on another aRPG and that is why Echtra was formed to begin in mid-2016. The setting of Torchlight was always an afterthought just as the setting of Diablo 1 and 2 have always been because the guys that made it did not care about that aspect of the game at all. Perfect World published TL1 and TL2 and bought the studio and the IP near the end of the Torchlight 1 development. I liked 1 and 2 because of developers who were not involved with 3, and while I respect the work people put into 3, it was never a game I was interested in. Honestly, I haven't played Torchlight 3 and I never will, likely. The product that was finally released was nothing like Torchlight II and I think a lot of people who where fans of the series because of those first two games where very disappointed. The setting of Torchlight was always a high point.Īfter Torchlight II's success the founders sold their company and their IP to Perfect World who shopped around for various studios, and basically Torchlight III ended in dev hell for like 8 years. Torchlight 2 was a really solid singleplayer game that basically ended up being a Diablo II remake in a different setting. ![]() It was released around the same time as Diablo III and Path of Exile, Grim Dawn would follow soon after. Torchlight 2 was a really solid release at a time where ARPGs where having a bit of a revival. It was part of the start of the Indie revolution of the last 10-15 years in gaming. ![]() Torchlight 1 was an indie darling created by the guys who made Diablo I and II. ![]()
